From motel to hotel, this was a dream project and complete overhaul of an existing Montauk motel with the intention to transition the property to a boutique Montauk hotel that could appeal
to both the quintessential “Summer in the Hamptons” New York crowd and the well-traveled, Conde-Nast loving Mediterranean vacationer. We provided an alluring balance of zen, color, texture, and sophistication to charm both audiences.
Intended to be the flagship location for a new boutique hotel brand. We reimagined the entire guest experience, from the first digital interaction with the brand all the way through to walking in the lobby for the first time to check in. The very name “Safran” is an homage to the most expensive of spices, and as only a very small part of the flower is used, it takes 75,000 flowers to make 1 lb of saffron and must be harvested manually. No detail too small, no effort spared, a hands-on intimacy - that is the feeling imbued in this flagship Safran hotel.
We drew on Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influence while playing with the color change that occurs when saffron hits water. We welcomed elements of the beach into the hotel, with textural movement on the ceilings and luxe picnic bonfires on the beach. We built a brand that combined luxury, comfort, and culture, then added a bit of spice.
